部分學者認為該琴來源於土耳其，部分認為只有其名稱有土耳其來源，而琴本身則由一種
稱為pandouris或pandourion的古希臘三弦琴發展而來。布祖基琴一般具有3~4個雙琴弦。
奏樂時，樂手一手按弦，另一手持銅錢大小的圓鍵，波動琴弦。其聲音清脆而富有活力。
